Manage your Success
The temporary nature of a project stands in contrast to “business as usual” – the usual operations that are repetitive and permanent, functions that create products or services. In practice, the management of these two systems is often found to be quite different and, as such, requires the development of distinct technical skills and the adoption of separate management.
Meeting the Project Challenge
The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all of the project goals and objectives while honouring the preconceived project constraints. Typical constraints are scope, time, and budget. The secondary – and more ambitious – challenge is to optimise the allocation and integration of inputs necessary to meet pre-defined objectives.
Many information technology projects fail, become excessively costly or miss deadlines for a variety reasons, but often fundamental errors are often the cause – basic mistakes that can be foreseen and readily-managed like:
- vague requirements from project inception
- lack of commitment from stakeholders and staff
- ever-changing goals – scope creep
- poor risk management
- too much focus on technology
- mismanaging resources, time and costs
Quite simply, ineffective project management can destroy a great project.
